Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Fearing stress, her parents were not keen to let performing before turning age 18. Perry acknowledged that she was not at ease in the stage during high school. However, she began doing it to connect with new people in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry made her debut in New York after graduation, landing minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry go back to California and find work as a theater actress. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry starred in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. She was also cast in The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The role was selected by auditions, even though she had a close association with it.
